Become
Since 1992 the amazing charity Become has been working to improve the everyday lives and future life chances of children in care and young care leavers.
Around 12,500 young people, aged 16 and above leave care each year to move on to independent or semi-independent life.
A key part of the support that Become provides is helping them navigate Higher and Further education through its specialist website Propel and Advice and Support Officer, Further and Higher Education, Jade Ward. WHF is part-funding Jade’s role for 2022 to allow her to continue to provide 1-2-1 guidance to care leavers.
In her role Jade interacts with around 500 contacts – care leavers, social care professionals and educational establishments – each year, helping with course selection, personal statements, finance and accommodation to give care leavers the best educational opportunities.
For the last couple of years, WHF has supported care leavers studying for degrees at Kingston University through the KU Cares programme. Through this, we have learnt just how challenging it can be for young people leaving the care system. Because of this, we wanted to see how we could help in other ways and this is how we came to support the fabulous Become.
